Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions

  • A water meter is a device that measures water use in residential or commercial buildings. Water flowing through the water meter is measured, recorded, and used to calculate your quarterly water bill.

  • Trenton Water Works, your water utility, is replacing existing water meters with modern, two-way communicating meters that our meter readers can read remotely, improving billing, customer service, and efficiency. Automatic meter readings will eliminate almost all estimated bills.

  • For most water utility customers, the water meter is in the basement of your home, connected to a water service line coming into the property from the street. To complete the upgrade, a TWW Meter Shop technician or our contracted installer, National Metering Services, will need access to your basement to briefly turn off the water to install the new water meter.

  • For your convenience, TWW has provided two options to schedule your new water meter installation:

    1. Customers in Hopewell Township and Ewing Township will receive an invitation letter from our contract vendor, National Metering Services. We have contracted with National Metering Services to install smart meters in your community. For your reference, their telephone number is 1-888-448-0009. Please watch your mail for a letter or postcard from the company.

    2. Customers in Trenton will receive an invitation letter from TWW's Meter Shop to schedule an appointment. You can reach the Meter Shop at (609) 989-3225 or (609) 989-3226. Please watch your mail for a letter from TWW's Meter Shop. For your reference, TWW is closed on federal, state, and municipal holidays.

  • TWW is upgrading water meters systemwide at no cost to our valued customers. The New Jersey Water Bank, a state revolving fund program jointly administered by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection and the New Jersey Infrastructure Bank, is funding the $20-million project. The project is part of TWW's $405-million, six-year capital plan announced in 2019. To learn more about TWW's capital work, call TWW’s Office of Communications and Community Relations at (609) 989-3033.

  • TWW is installing a two-way communicating meter that uses wireless radio frequency (RF) transmissions to transmit water usage information to our Meter Shop personnel in the field. Public and private water systems across the United States, including New Jersey, use modern two-way communicating water meters to strengthen service delivery and customer billing. More accurate water usage data collected quickly and efficiently by TWW personnel will maximize TWW system performance and vastly improve service to our valued customers.

  • Customers and TWW service-area consumers can call TWW's Office of Communications and Community Relations at (609) 989-3033 to get answers to questions about this project, water quality, capital work, operations, and more. A TWW representative can talk to your group or organization by appointment through our community outreach initiative, H2Open, about our comprehensive work to maintain high water quality and optimum system performance.
